Bunk Beds For A Lifetime
Back in the seventies, I was just a little kid, but one of my fondest memories was going to visit my grandparents on my mother’s side. They were about a six hour ride away from us, so whenever we did go, we always stayed over one or two nights. It was just the four of us then, me, my sister, my mom, and my dad. The one thing that stands out so clearly for me was the full bunk beds that my grandparents had bought for us, and were always there in the spare bedroom.
Boy did we both love those beds, every other visit was my turn to sleep on the top. In fact we used to have it planned out days before we went who’s turn it was to sleep in the top. The waiting used to drive us crazy. I used to love just going up and down the ladder that was hanging on the side of the bed. We would always take the blankets from the beds and hang them over the bottom bunk to make a fort.
To me, these bunk beds were unique because they were made out of a thick wood and they were painted white. I had never seen white bunk beds before which is one of the reasons I remember them so clearly.
As the years passed, my sister got older and she didn’t make the trip as often with the rest of the family. Even though the top bed was mine every time she didn’t go, it was very lonely without her. It just wasn’t the same with just me there. I would continue to build a fort out of the bottom bunk, but I quickly became bored and would watch TV or find something else to do.
While I was away at college one night laying in an inexpensive bunk bed myself, I received news that my grandfather had passed. I was really saddened over this news because those trips we went on we so fun and so rich with memories. I already miss all the time we spent together.
